What is What’s On!?
What’s On! is a free, full colour, glossy, community events, entertainment and local business magazine.
Published bi-monthly in print and on-line. Bringing together everything that’s happening in a community under one roof in a colourful, positive way.
What’s On! is a feel good magazine that communities love and take to their hearts.
What’s On! magazines are owned by Blueberry Publications.
What’s the difference between a licence agreement and a franchise agreement?
They are very similar but the main difference is a license agreement gives you more freedom to run your business yourself. You get to use the What’s On! systems and branding but have artistic discretion when it comes to page layout of your magazine and also the day to day operation of your magazine business. Giving you more overall freedom.
Why a What’s On! License?
What’s On! is a way of life. It gives you the freedom of being your own boss, setting your own hours working right from home, in a fun industry. There really is nothing better than enjoying what you do whilst making a great living. If you are outgoing, enjoy meeting people, being creative and are passionate about your community a What’s On! license is for you! A What’s On! license gives you the ability to get into the publishing business quickly and smoothly with no experience. With What’s On! you’ll make a real difference in your community. It’s tremendously rewarding.
What does a license cost?
The license fee is $15,000 per territory.
And royalties?
Often you will find with franchises you have to pay a percentage of your sales to the franchise company. So the more you earn, the more you pay. With What’s On! there are no royalty percentages charged, just a low, flat monthly license fee. At What's On! we feel you should keep the rewards from the work you put in.
What are the start up costs?
Other than the license fee the start up costs are minimal. Most people already have the equipment they need to get going. You'll need a computer or laptop with Microsoft Office software and a small home printer/scanner; a digital camera is useful, but not essential with modern phones these days. You will need to pay for a business license for the city you'll be running your business in, these vary from district to district. As well as a small fee to register your business name, but that's about it. You'll receive a start up pack with your personalized business cards, rate cards, order forms and ready-to-go website pages, so you can hit the ground running... all part of your What's On! License.
Do I get a protected territory?
Yes! Each license covers a set territory which is yours alone.
Do I need any qualifications to run a What’s On! magazine business?
No. All training is provided as well as on-going support. However a basic knowledge of computers is essential and also grammar. You don’t need to write any articles (unless you want to) but you do need to be able to edit submissions for general grammar and spelling, unless you hire an copy reader.
Do I need to have experience in publishing or design?
No. You will receive all the training you need to be able to publish your magazine smoothly and will have one of our fantastic designers to work with.
What does it take to be successful?
Like any business there is a lot of hard work to be done at first. Owning your own business is not a 9 - 5 job, but it is fun. To be successful you need to be an outgoing, people person. You need to like people but more importantly people need to like you. And you have to be prepared to get out and about in your community making sales, talking to community groups and local businesses. It definitely is the old adage... you get out what you put in.
What training and support do I get?
Set up and face to face training takes about a week to 10 days depending on how quickly you learn. It is then on-going for your first few magazines. Training will tail off as you become more experienced but we’re always here for you, for whatever help you need along the way.
Are there multiple income streams?
Your main income to begin with will come from advertising space in your magazine and website. There are opportunities to offer social media management and some of our Licensees also do event planning in addition to their magazine.
And the big question... what profit can I expect?
This depends, like most things, on how much work you are prepared to put in. Any business start up comes with risk.
An established 32 page magazine that is filling its’ advertising capacity, can bring in approximately $8,000 - $10,000 a month in profit. Once you increase your page count there is room for increased profit, plus you can gain extra revenue from website advertising sales, and added income streams.
